Notes

This system was built to test the heat generation capacity and thermal performance of a high end gaming computer. This rig is purpose built to generate heat through computation. It was the first prototype in a system of combined heat and computation devices being developed by LO3 Energy.

The silver box below the computer is an energy storage system filled with 10 gallons of thermal phase change material. This system regularly stores 625k BTU of 160-190f heat energy generated by the computer. The thermal energy stored in this system is used to preheat domestic hot water, generate space heat, regenerate desiccant air conditioning and produce refrigeration through an absorption process.

The cooling system is comprised of a split loop with the CPU and GPUs on a primary, high temperature loop and North/Southbridge, RAM, hard drives and Aquero XT6 coolers on a secondary low temperature loop. Split loops are required to address the different thermal characteristics and operating temperatures of the components.

Reaching a peak 1600w electrical draw allows the rig to quickly take 80f ambient phase change material to 190f storing 625k BTU of thermal energy. This thermal energy is used to offset up to 50% of the heat load in a typical home while providing excess computation for research.  It has been in continuous operation for more than 2 years.
